Monte Altura Fortress is a fortified citadel built in 1887 for the control and protection of Sardinia north-eastern coast, a perfect combination between the green vegetation of the Mediterranean maquis, the rocks left naturally emerge from the walls and the construction of the plant itself, built with the local rock so as to blend even more in the typical lunar landscape of Gallura.
The fortified citadel of Monte Altura, after more than 200 years, is in perfect condition and gives us all the environments of that time, such as the numerous warehouses, ammunition stores, the accommodation of officers, NCOs and soldiers, and again the dormitories, the canteen, the laundry room, the armoury and the telegraph office.
The backdrop to this military construction of the '800 remain the emerald colours of the sea, the horizon just dampened by the lines of the imposing mountains of Corsica that is only 15 kilometres from the coast of Palau and is clearly visible especially during the many clear days.
You will be fascinated by the compelling but sometimes tragic historical events that have indelibly marked the past of what today is a scenario to contemplate but that in other eras has been the scene of famous heroic deeds.
Our guides will take you back in time to discover historical moments that have seen protagonists such as Domenico Millelire, Napoleon Bonaparte, Admiral Horatio Nelson, the hero of the Two Worlds Giuseppe Garibaldi and the brave heroes who lost their lives aboard the cruiser Triste and the battleship Roma during World War II.
